Outlook EDB file limits

Running Exchange Server 2003 Standard edition is accompanied with 16 GB maximum file size limit for EDB database file. Whenever there is exceeding of Outlook EDB file limits, user has to face the consequences for this. EDB database mailbox store simply fails to mount onto Exchange Server resulting in inaccessibility of user mailboxes and their respective emails.

You get the following error message when EDB file exceeds its defined size limit :

“Exchange\priv1.edb has reached its maximum size of 16382 MB. If the database cannot be restarted, an offline defragmentation may be performed to reduce its size”

Or,

“The database "Mailbox Store (Server Name)" has reached the maximum allowed size. Attempting to unmount the database”

In Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2, database size limits have been increased from 16 GB to 18 GB. Moreover, the limit can be increased to as much as 75 GB by using a registry key.

Being an administrator if you are in urgency to increase the EDB file size limit on temporary basis in order to avoid corruption, you can follow the given steps and can later on go with upgrading to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

  • You can increase the database size limit by 1 GB temporary and can avoid dismounting errors.
  • Try removing unnecessary database content to alleviate the size to some extent.
  • Alternatively, you can defragment the database to reduce the database to a level that is in the defined boundaries of the database size.

Above steps give you temporary relief. But what in such hullabaloo your EDB database files gets corrupt and all your emails and other important stuff gets stuck in the server.

Try using Exchange Server email recovery software that restore Exchange database file that has gone corrupt due to exceeding of EDB file limits. This EDB recovery software efficiently converts .edb files to working .pst files through which emails of MS Exchange server can be viewed with Microsoft Outlook email client.
